The making of each Precious Moments figurine is a work of artistic achievement that begins with Sam Butcher. It originates in his studio, either with a sketch, drawing or painting. The artwork is photographed and this “portrait” is sent to the design studio where a clay model is created. Once the three dimensional model is approved, the master mold, which can sometimes consists of several parts, is created.
After porcelain liquid (called a slip) has been poured into the molds, hardened and released, the individual pieces are then hand-assembled and re-scultpted. They re then baked for fourteen hours in large high-temperature ovens, called kilns (at 2400 degrees Fahrenheit or 1316 degrees Celsius). When they emerge, they are white, translucent and ready to be painted.
Each figurine is hand painted by highly skilled artisans who work from a pastel palette composed of special ceramic pigments, not paint, of as many as sixteen colors. These ceramic pigments are specifically formulated to duplicate Sam’s artwork, using brushes that are penpoint fine to outline the eyes and accentuate details.
Once painted, the figurines are given another go in the kiln for a final firing that permanently fuses the color to the porcelain. This firing also makes the colors impervious to light, heat and moisture.
The entire process takes an average of a week, with each figurine going through at least six inspections. Through the entire process of creating the figurine, each one is checked by at least twelve inspectors. If any flaw is detected at any stage, the figurine is destroyed. Only those that meet the high standards of rigorous review are carefully wrapped, nestled in their boxes and sent out to win collector’s hearts.
And win hearts they do, worldwide. And why not? Events in the timetable of life are honored in the Precious Moments collection. The miracle of birth flows smoothly into childhood adventures and misadventures. They also celebrate specific occasions including graduations, marriage and anniversaries.
Increasing the value of Precious Moments figurines are Limited Edition pieces and those that graduate (after a certain number is produced, the mold is destroyed), making them rare and valued as collectors pieces.
The idea behind limiting an edition is to increase the rarity of a piece by restricting its quantity. The fact that there are a few of something is only one of many factors that affect its desirability and, therefore, its collectibility.
