There is at least one doll in every household — whether they are made of bisque, celluloid, china, clay, cloth, corn husks paper, plastic, polymer clay, porcelain, resin, rubber, vinyl, wax wood, bone, ivory, papier-mâché, leather, wood, even stone or whatever else — making it the most popular toy. In fact, archeological evidence prove that dolls are the oldest known toys.
While dolls have traditionally been toys for children, they are also collected by adults, for their nostalgic value, beauty, historical importance or financial value. Indeed, dolls have always been one of the most fascinating collectibles worldwide.
Precious Moments dolls are among the most popular dolls in contemporary society. Sam Butcher and his wife Katie—an accomplished artist—combined their talents to create the first Precious Moments doll. He styled the subject and she designed the body and clothes and stitched the fabrics to dress most of the originals. The first few dolls were inspired by and represented members of Sam and Bill’s families.
It is very evident that Sam and Katie made sure that their work of love was reproduced with exacting detail. Not surprisingly, one of their dolls won as Doll of the Year during the 1985 National Association of Limited Edition Dealers at the International Plate Collectors’ Convention in South Bend, Indiana.
Today, the Precious Moments Doll Collection is an extensive collection of beautiful pieces, each one produced with the same love and affection shown by Sam and Katie during the first couple of years of doll production.
The Precious Moments Dolls are available at Jojo’s Christmas Cottage. In fact, Sam even offers a Philippine Collection which portray certain lifestyles, professions, and even historical characters.
The Philippine Collection includes Doctors, Nurses, Ballerinas in color coordinated toe shoes, Hula dancers in two-piece costumes, and the very popular Sam The Painter, among a host of others. There are Bride and Groom dolls either in Americana or Filipiniana attire, including a Hi! Babies version wearing the traditional Barong and Baro’t Saya wedding gown. And then there are Maids of Honor in beautiful floor length gowns, and even an Ati princess in her regalia.
